Dean of St Michael’s Cathedral Dr Frank Marshall has warned of a trend in which Barbadian citizens and residents commit white collar crime, believing they have a right to absolution.
In his sermon at a service to mark the start of a new legal year at St Mary’s Anglican Church in Bridgetown yesterday, the Dean said the proneness to defraud throughout the world now seemed to be a “ready utility and resource in the business world and in the name of business success”.
He pointed to the case of convicted and imprisoned Texas billionaire Allan Stanford which he considered “close enough to sound a caution to Barbados”.
Marshall contended: “We have to concern ourselves where we find that there are local white-collared citizens and residents who transgress but who would argue an entitlement and right to absolution on the grounds that they were taking strategic steps in furtherance of business development and prosperity.” (GC)
