As a result of occasionally high levels of nitrates in the island’s water, Barbados is seeking to invest in a process of purification to maintain a healthy drinking supply.
Barbados Water Authority (BWA) project manager Stephen Lindo announced a plan for reverse osmosis yesterday, after Minister of Agriculture Dr David Estwick informed journalists at his ministry’s headquarters that for some time the local water quality had been deteriorating.
“We have evidence that the total nitrates in relation to the litres of water are almost and at times beyond what the World Health Organization (WHO) would consider drinkable water,” said the minister.
Lindo said the $25 million reverse osmosis plan, formulated on paper since 2008, would reduce the level of nitrates and any other contaminants.
