CARIBBEAN POLICYMAKERS are being urged to speedily explore the synergies between tourism and the diasporic economy, described as the region’s second largest.
The call came yesterday from Dr Keith Nurse, director of the Shridath Ramphal Centre For International Trade Law, Policy And Services, at the University of the West Indies (UWI).
Speaking to the DAILY NATION at the end of the three-day African Diaspora Heritage Trail (ADHT) Conference at the Lloyd Erskine Sandiford Centre, he said that as the global recession continued and traditional markets were clearly in decline, more countries were tapping into the diasporic tourism market.
He said there were many synergies, including the way diasporic tourism impacted on information and communication, and pointed to the telecommunications sector as an example of a major foreign exchange earner due to its use by members of the large diaspora. (RJ)
