OUTSIDE THE PULPIT: Need to cure the disease

A very dangerous disease is spreading across our country quickly and it has to be addressed urgently.
It is the chain, bracelet and bangle snatching crime that modern-day criminals have turned to.
This is very frightening because those who have been caught and brought before the courts so far are all young people between the ages of 16 and 30.
What is very hurtful is that all of them have gone through our educational system.
What is wrong? Has the educational system failed us? Or is it the case that people need quick money and are not prepared to work hard?
Something has to be wrong. Having said that, one must realize that today’s young people do have a mind of their own and regardless of what the adults may say or do they are prepared to go their own way!
It is clear to me that they are not afraid of the police or prison – I certainly am.
We have to do something now before it reaches the cancer stage.
This new reality has implications for law and order.
I am sure this is a very big challenge for the judiciary. In order to cure this disease before it becomes malignant, I hope researchers are at work and if they are not, they must not delay.
I am sure that those who are involved in crime have some very fantastic brains and it is a pity that they don’t put them to good use.
I advise everyone, especially those who are wearing chains, expensive watches, bracelets and bangles, to be very careful.
Is this what we are having as we celebrate the 50th anniversary of free secondary education?
