Garcia matter headed court

“We have had enough!”
With those words attorney-at-law David Comissiong announced yesterday he was going to court to challenge the continued immigration detention of Cuban national Raul Garcia.
Comissiong told the SUNDAY?SUN Queen’s Counsel Leslie Haynes was leading a team of lawyers including himself, Ajuma Boardi and Paula Lett, in applying for a writ of habeas corpus on Garcia’s behalf commanding the chief immigration officer to present him before a court in order to determine whether his detention was lawful.
He said the affidavit would be filed early next week.
“We have had enough of butting our heads against the walls of bureaucracy,” Comissiong said, “enough of discussing and meeting with Government officials who seem oblivious to the human rights of Garcia. It is time for the Supreme Court to take control of this matter and settle it once and for all.”
Garcia, 56, was convicted and served 20 years in prison for illegally importing cocaine into Barbados. At that time, he led the authorities to believe that he was a Colombian and that his name was Edilberto Coronell.
