Minister of Commerce and Trade Haynesley Benn is on a mission to transform plant waste – including grass and river tamarind trees that end up in the dump – into something useful.
Senator Benn spoke about the mission in Heywoods Park, St Peter, yesterday while assisting the St Peter Parish Ambassadors in cleaning up and restoring a park for the surrounding community.
“I have been trying for a while to link the ministries of Agriculture, Environment, Health and Transport and Works, all of which have cleaning programmes,” he said.
“There are grass and river tamarinds growing everywhere which are being taken to the dump; but my idea is to make them into useful commodities such as feed for livestock.”
Benn said the plant waste generated by the cleaning programme would be gathered and there was a farmer waiting for it. (CA)
