SOCIAL SCENE: Bristol Rangers’ big day

The atmosphere in the Hastings Room at the Savannah Hotel on a recent Saturday night was charged with emotion as Bristol Rangers men and women, who in their youth shared leisure and character-building activities, gathered to celebrate the club’s 50th anniversary.
Founder Clevedon Mayers was moved to retrace his steps and share experiences along the way, after he was presented with the Founder’s Award by club stalwart Harold Hoyte. He later joined club president Cheryl Squires in cutting the anniversary cake.
In the packed, gaily-decorated room Rangers reflected on youthful days participating in charm courses conducted by Marvo Manning, on debating competitions in which they emerged winners, on the club’s supremacy in netball, and most of all on the camaraderie that existed and the club’s impact on their lives.
The strong bond that existed between members was evident, judging from the many who journeyed to Barbados from the United States, Canada and the Caribbean to participate in the anniversary celebrations.
