Kenny?John?showcased what he had garnered from a stint last year at Northlands Park in Canada by capturing the jockeys’ title of the Barbados Turf Club’s second season.
John, who was champion apprentice in 2008, finished the season with three wins on the final day.
For the season, he compiled 14 wins, six seconds and four thirds from 58 mounts, earning $145 742.
With a winning percentage of 24, John also had two race days where he won three races.
On the fifth day – the Barbados Midsummer Creole Classic Race Day – he won with Cassanova, Lady Quill and Little Man Arran.
He might have saved his best for last as he went into the final day needing two wins to join the leader, Jalon Samuel, who by then had moved his tack to the United States. On that final day, BTBA Breeders’ Sales Race Day, John landed three wins to overtake the leader and claim the season title.
He got the day going with a pole-to-pole victory on The Price Is Right before capturing the main race with Lady Quill and clinching the title with his win astride Little Man Arran.
John paired well with trainer Jonathon Simpson and champion trainer Andrew Nunes as he shared seven wins with Simpson and three with Nunes.
He seems to have adopted a professional approach with special emphasis being placed on his weight and the quality of his rides.
John will have some work to do in the final season if he is to take the overall jockeys’ championship. He is presently nine wins behind the leader, Antonio Whitehall.
Second in the table was Samuel, who recorded 13 wins, six seconds and six thirds from 55 mounts for earnings of $223 205 and a winning percentage of 23.5. It has not been one of his better seasons, with some races being missed.
However, he gave a timely reminder of his skills by recording four wins on the ninth day – the BTBA Race Day.
The first of his wins came aboard Local Speed in the afternoon’s third race. He then swiftly went through a hat-trick, starting in Race 5 with Midnight Touch. The other wins were in Race 6 astride Vitality and Race 7 on Discreetwon.
Reshaun Latchman finished third in the table with ten wins, 11 seconds and seven thirds from 67 mounts, earning $142 968 in total. His winning percentage for the season was a below-par 15.
He is presently third in the overall quest for the jockeys’ title – three wins off the leader – but will need to return to his best form to wrap up the championship.
Veteran Anderson Trotman rounded out the top four for the season, finishing with nine wins, eight seconds and 11 thirds from 76 rides, earning $148 747 in total.
This 12-percentage-winning jockey had what can be considered a modest season and is five wins adrift of the overall current leader.
