FIVE million people in the Caribbean bore grins as wide as the Atlantic Ocean yesterday after West Indies sensationally captured the biggest prize in Twenty20 cricket – the World Cup – by knocking Sri Lanka over in their own backyard.
Every sports bar and shop, for three and a half hours had standing room only, as thousands of Barbadians were glued to ESPN?1 for every nail-biting minute of an absorbing showdown the Caribbean boys won by 36 runs.
West Indies partied as well as they played, and nothing epitomized that more than when Marlon Samuels dismissed Ajantha Mendis in the closing stages.
Some West Indies fielders rushed to him, and started brushing him all over his body. It appeared as if they were trying to dust Samuels’ clothes. When the “dust” had settled, they broke away laughing heartily. (BW/MK)
