KINGSTON, Jamaica – All schools were scheduled to reopen today after three days of disruption, due to Hurricane Sandy.
However according to Education Minister, Ronald Thwaites, while most schools were spared the wrath of the storm that swept across Jamaica last Wednesday, his Ministry is in need of J$120 million (US$1.3 million) to repair those schools that were damaged and that figure could rise significantly.
Based on this, he disclosed some schools might not be fully operational. The Education Minister said the issue of repairs for schools affected by Hurricane Sandy, will go to Cabinet today.
The Education Ministry closed all schools as Sandy moved across the island.
On Friday, schools in the parishes of Clarendon, St James, St Elizabeth, Hanover, Westmoreland, St Catherine and Manchester were scheduled to resume classes, but many children stayed away.
In the Corporate area and the other parishes schools remained closed mainly because of uncertainty with the supply of water and electricity.
Meanwhile, almost one week after the storm, the Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management (ODPEM) is trying to assist those who are still trying to recover from the catastrophe. (CMC)
