St George rule the course

St George Secondary are enjoying a resurgence of sorts in distance running, producing two individual winners and capturing a division title during yesterday’s Secondary Schools’ Cross Country at the Wildey Gym course.
A strong performance saw the St George athletes unofficially win the Under-15 Girls’ division crown on the back of a one-two finish by Mary Fraser and Jeal Williams in their 2 000 metres race.Fraser’s reappearance from a year-long hiatus was pleasing enough on its own, and the diminutive distance queen wasted no time in announcing her arrival as she raced to the front from the starter’s gun.
Williams wasn’t too far behind, clocking seven minutes and three seconds to finish behind Fraser (6:51) and ahead of third-placed Tiana Bowen (7:10)  of Lester Vaughan.
They were just two of four athletes to finish within the top ten from St George, who had five girls inside the first 21 to cross the line after Anya Williams (fifth: 7:31), Donja Laborde (tenth: 7:31) and Keturah Alleyne (21st: 8:25) all clocked under eight and a half minutes.
St George had more success through Luke Hinkson who sprinted the final 600 of the 1600 metres in the first form boys’ equivalent to win in a time of 5:18.
However, the team honours seemed to fall Grantley Adams’ way when Shakeem Boyce (5:24), Shaquon Sealy (5:27), Pallu Arthur (5:30) and Addis O’neale (5:38) finished second, third, fourth and seventh respectively.Combermere produced a near identical performance in the senior girls’ 3000 metres, where Shani Adams (12:05) came home first to lead a four-girl group including fourth-placed Gabrielle Ellis (13:25), sixth-placed Akela Knight (13:32) and seventh-placed Celina Forte (13:46).
Grantley Adams’ Elizabeth Williams (12:26) was second while Jade Searles (12:42) of Springer finished third.
