For those who took in the LIME NIFCA Performing Arts Dance Finals at Frank Collymore Hall, one beautiful piece of art was bound to capture their attention.
It was created in less than a month’s time beginning in September at the launch of the National Independence Festival Of Creative Arts, by many hands, including Minister of Family, Culture, Sports and Youth Stephen Lashley’s, under the direction of artist Wayne Hinds.
The piece features elements of all performing arts disciplines – drama/speech, music, dance, literary arts, visual arts/photography/fine arts and craft, film and video.
The long-standing artist who was commissioned by the National Cultural Foundation (NCF) said the piece included paint brushes and pencils projecting forward and sideways, and a broken trident made of Styrofoam close to the bottom with the NCF’s logo.
In describing the montage, Hinds said: “[It] is supposed to transcend years . . . . I was very happy to do the piece. It is a natural progression from what I am doing right now. I like the process with the use of natural materials in the construction of artwork.”
Hinds, a consistent participant in NIFCA from 1998 to 2009, has won several bronze awards for his work.
NIFCA continues with the culinary competition tomorrow at the Hilton Barbados and the Visual Arts & Photography Exhibition on Monday. The NIFCA Performing Arts Gala is Sunday, November 18, at the Gymnasium of the Garfield Sobers Sports Complex. (PR)
