Debt limits UWI energy project

FINANCIAL CONSTRAINTS have knocked some of the fuel out of the energy project at the University of the West Indies (UWI), but it will steam ahead.
A “saddened” principal of the Cave Hill Campus, Professor Sir Hilary Beckles, told stakeholders
at the launch of a new renewable energy initiative on Tuesday that they had to divert funds for energy research and work in the Faculty of Science and Technology to pay wages and salaries at the “financially distressed” university.
“We were geared up to make a transforming contribution to this country. Now we have an enormous debt, a cloud over this campus. It is rolling back our research capacity and capability . . . .
