New champions will be crowned in this year’s Kingz of the Court basketball competition on Sunday at the YMCA.
Defending champs, Edgecliffe Spikes were beaten at the semi-final stage by St John’s Sonics Tuesday evening.
The Sonics registered an emphatic 73-52 win over their fellow St John rivals to book their place in the finals.
They will face last year’s losing finalists, NZ Ballers, who edged defeated Combined Faith Thunder 71-66 in the other semi-final.
The Sonics survived a game-high 24-point performance from Jevon Lashley to transform a close 32-31 scoreline into a 21-point rout.
They were led by Deidre Gibson’s 17 points, Rommel Garnes scored 14, while Russell Greaves and Dwayne Kellman each scored 12 points.
Larry King scored 16 points in a losing cause for Edgecliffe.
In the night’s second game, NZ Ballers used a strong second-quarter performance before putting away a determined Thunder side.
Nicholai Williams led four players in double digits with 16 points, receiving good support from Jerome Small, who scored 14, Darren Adams, 11, and Mark Leacock 10.
For the Thunder, Greg Springer had 31 points and Dale Mccollin, 16. (RB)
