Speaker of the House of Assembly Michael Carrington has cited lack of a quorum for Parliament’s tardiness in handling of a more than two-year-old issue of Minister of Agriculture Dr David Estwick’s alleged brandishing of a gun and threatening Opposition MP Dale Marshall in the precincts of the House.
Carrington made the comment yesterday in the Lower Chamber, after drawing members’ attention to an article in yesterday’s DAILY NATION in which Marshall said he was yet to get satisfaction regarding the alleged incident.
Carrington said Marshall’s comments regarding the lack of satisfaction from the parliamentary process “give the impression that something is amiss and the Committee of Privileges has not met on the matter”.
“That is not true. Every effort has been made to convene the committee. It met on the first occasion, where we circulated some material with respect to procedure. After that we’ve had difficulty with getting a quorum, and we’ve had difficulty because of a lack of attendance from both Government members and members of the Opposition.” (BA)
