It is possible to have an AIDS-free generation, says United States Ambassador to Barbados, Larry Palmer.
He said that it was possible because of the tremendous progress in scientific research and innovation over the last 30 years and the governmental and non-governmental organizations that assisted in the fight against the disease.
He said that between 2005 and 2011 the Caribbean recorded a bigger drop in AIDS-related deaths than any other region in the world.
Additionally, over the past decade the region had the biggest drop in new HIV infections, which went down by 42 per cent.
“In Barbados the incidence of HIV infection among the adults has declined by over 50 per cent since 2001 . . . , one of the largest declines in the world,” Palmer said.
The ambassador was speaking Thursday on the occasion of a World AIDS Day exhibition of photography by Harrison College students as part of a photo project entitled Working Together Towards An AIDS-Free Generation. (LK)
