Veteran Byron Morris shone with bat and ball as Newbery Province won the Barbados Cricket League’s 35-overs knockout title by overpowering T&E Maycock Lodge Road by 13 runs in the final yesterday.
Morris, a former BCL Division 1 captain, propped up Newbery Province’s batting with an unbeaten 63 in a total of 210 for four from 30 overs after losing the toss.
Revised target
Morris showcased his all-round talent, taking two for 23 when Lodge Road were set a revised target of 183 from 26 overs because of rain at the start of their innings.
Lodge Road were eventually dismissed for 169 in 25.3 overs.
“I am happy that in my first year as captain we were able to win the title,” a jubilant Newbery Province captain Ryan Worrell said amid the celebrations.
“I knew we could do it because we had a good team.”
Earlier, the day did not start well for Worrell as he was out for a duck in a fiery opening spell by his counterpart Henry Austin.
After Conrad Drakes retired hurt, Morris and Troy Riley (24) stabilized the innings in a 59-run fourth-wicket stand.
Morris was next joined by his nephew, former Barbados wicket-keeper Carlo Morris, in an 85-run partnership that added impetus to the innings.
Blazing start
Carlo’s 30 off 38 balls contained four lofted boundaries while Byron’s undefeated 63 came from 70 balls with six fours.
In reply, former Barbados opener Martin Nurse gave the Lodge Road inningsa blazing start.
After he was second out with the score on 72 for two, having blazed 30 from 18 balls with two sixes and two boundaries, the innings fell away as wickets tumbled regularly.
Leon Layne and Winston Hamblin, both with 27, tried but were upstaged by Newbery Province captain Worrell (three for 29) and off-spinner Leandra Clarke (three for 46).
