THE INTERNATIONAL COMMUNITY knows who the real terrorist is, said Cuban Ambassador to Barbados Lissette Perez, as she lauded CARICOM’s 40-year stand with her country against the blockade imposed by the United States.
Perez described the trade embargo as a continuing form of genocide in a strongly worded speech yesterday to launch a panel discussion on The Meaning And Implications Of Cuba-CARICOM Diplomatic Relations In The Current Global Politico-economic Environment.
She told the audience at the 3Ws Oval that in 1972 Barbados, Guyana, Jamaica and Trinidad and Tobago officially defied the mighty United States and cemented diplomatic relations with Cuba.
“This was almost suicidal and the fact that those countries had just gained independence gave greater dimension to any probable reprisals,” Perez said, adding that the “unjust” blockade was followed four years later by the bombing of Cubana Airlines flight 455, taking 73 lives off the coast of Barbados.
