Catwell cops karting crown

Tremaine Catwell is the new champion driver of the Barbados Karting Association’s Frutee Championship.
Catwell amassed a massive 845 points and also took the trophy for the driver recording the season’s fastest lap time of 32.14 seconds.
He was presented with the coveted trophy during the association’s awards presentation at the clubhouse at Bushy Park last Saturday.
At the ceremony, attended by drivers, mechanics, sponsors and friends, Catwell showered praise on all those who had assisted him during the season, especially his father and technical specialist Greg “Cheezie” Catwell.
“It was a team effort and I thank all those who helped to make it possible,” he said.
“The overall competition was tough, but I feel happy knowing that I have won the championship.”
Apart from the champion driver’s trophy, the new champion also collected a $100 voucher from Automotive Art and a dinner voucher compliments Chefette Restaurants.
Last year’s champion Zane Maloney, who ended with 779 points and took top honours in the Yamaha 270-pound Class, was second overall.
The 2010 champion Christian Hinds had to settle for third place after chalking up 768 points. He finished second in the Yamaha 310 Premier Class.
Nicholas Gill (514 points) and Javani Smith (421) completed the top places in the Yamaha 310-pound Class.
Joshua Maloney, with a total of 776 points, took second place in the Yamaha Sportsman 270-pound Class behind his cousin Zane, while the promising Saviola Thomas finished third with 587 points.
Joshua Parris (442) and Calvin Bartlett (255) took fourth and fifth places respectively in the same class.
Luke St John was adjudged Sportsman Of The Year for his outstanding display of sportsmanship. He drove and tested the new Parilla X30 engine for 2012 knowing he would not receive any points towards the championship.
He was presented with a voucher compliments Chefette Restaurants and a $50 voucher compliments Automotive Art.
Calvin Bartlett was the Most Improved Driver for the season and was presented with a voucher compliments Chefette Restaurants and a Hitachi Cordless Drill from Fasteners Barbados Limited.
Female driver Krystal Kirton was Rookie Of Tthe Year. She won a dinner compliments Chefette Restaurants and a $50 voucher from Automotive Art.
Marshals Mervin Holder, Carl Bedford and O’Neal Lovell were honoured for their outstanding service to karting during the year.
Apart from being presented with commemorative plaques, they received cruises for two aboard the pleasure crafts Silver Moon, Tiami and Jolly Roger cruises respectively.
Appreciation awards for outstanding work were also presented to Kurt Seabra, John Croney, David Reece, Natalie Maloney and Marie Thomas.
