Weekes, Clarke dominate pool

Pirates’ Luis Sebastian Weekes and Alexis Clarke were the top performers at the recently concluded Cave Shepherd & Company Ltd Short Course National Swimming Championships recently at the Aquatic Centre.
Competing in the 11-12 age group, Weekes amassed 131 points, while Clarke topped the girls’ 13-14 with 105 points, just two more than teammate Hannah Gill.
On the final two days of competition, Weekes won the 11-12 Boys’ 200-metre breaststroke in 2 minutes, 46.64 seconds and was second in the 100-metre backstroke (1:08.50) behind Jack Kirby who set a new record of 1:07.72.
Weekes was also runner up to Damon St Prix in the 50-metre fly, clocking 31.27 to St Prix’s 30.43. He won the 100-metre breast in 1:17.01 and was runner up to Kirby (2:24.26) and St Prix (26.96) in the 200-metre back and 50-metre free with times of 2:24.50 and 28.22
Clarke dominated her age-group, winning the 200-metre back in 2:33.22, 100-metre back 1:11.78 and was second in the 200-metre individual medley in a time of 2:36.89 behind Kimberley Willoughby (2:31.56) and was third in the 100-metre breast in 1:35.07 behind Willoughby (1:19.20) and Kai Proverbs (1:22.96).
Willoughby also won the 50-metre fly (31.62) and 50-metre free (28.90), Clarke second in 32.55 and third respectively in 29.33.
Gill was outstanding in the 11-12 girls’ age group.
On the final weekend, she won the 50-metre free in 28.44 and was second in both the 100-metre breast in 1:23.47 behind Shne Joachim (1:21.89) and the 50-metre fly in 33.33 behind Kendi Bynoe (33.02).
Alpha’s Alex Sobers finished with 121 points in the 13 -14 age group, winning the 50 free in 26.06 seconds; the 200 back in 2:27.43 and 200 fly in 2:21.01.
He was third in the 100 breast and fifth in the 50 breast which were won by Akeem Nurse and Jonathan Manning, respectively. (SAT)
