Jazz show with a difference

Hundreds turned up at Ilaro Court, Two Mile Hill, St Michael, on Sunday night for Deryck Walcott’s Christmas Jazz show. And what a show it was!
Gerald Albright more than delivered, as did Marcus Miller, Kirk Whalum and Christian Scott. A welcome surprise performance came from soloist Shelea Frazier, whose melodic rendition of This Christmas must have erased the classic version everyone had in their heads.
But the show-stopper came by way of four jazz unknowns – teenagers plucked from the Ilaro audience who were invited on stage to jam with the greats.
The night featured traditional Christmas songs in a very traditional fashion. Musical improvisations and experimentation were the order of the evening, as Albright and company let the music prance around the grounds, weave its way through the trees and fill every nook and cranny of Two Mile Hill.
