TORONTO – Ace Barbadian rider Patrick Husbands signed off his 2012 Woodbine campaign with a double on last Sunday’s 13-race card, to finish second overall in the jockeys’ standings.
The 39-year-old claimed victory aboard Eugene Melnyk’s favourite Bagatelle Park in Race 2 before returning to take Race 6 with another odds-on bet Bear’s Gem.
With the brace, Husbands finished on 167 wins, well behind defending champion Luis Contreras of Mexico who easily defended his title with 195 wins.
Contreras, however, had over 250 more rides than Husbands in the eight-month long season.
For Husbands, his final tally fell well short of his career-best 192 wins, achieved in a stellar season last year, and the 188 he landed when he took the last of his six jockeys’ title in 2009.
The Barbadian collected CAN$9 129 457 in earnings but finished second to Contreras, who posted $9 299 075.
It was the sixth year Husbands passed $9 million in earnings.
No other Caribbean riders finished in the top ten at Woodbine but Barbadian Slade Callaghan was 18th with 19 wins, earning $1.1 million. (CMC)
