GUYANA – Tagenarine Chanderpaul, son of dependable West Indies batsman Shivnarine Chanderpaul, is set to emulate his father by making his first-class debut as a teenager next month.
Tagenarine, 16, is tipped to open Guyana’s batting when they take on the Leeward Islands in the regional four-day competition from February 9 to 12 at the Antigua Recreation Ground.
His father, currently the world’s second ranked Test batsman, made his first-class debut for Guyana at 18.
The young Chanderpaul, described as being difficult to dislodge and capable of spending a lot of time at the wicket, is the lone new face in a 13-man squad. Ricardo Adams and Rajiv Ivan are the newcomers in the Super50 squad.
Notable absentees from both squads are Royston Crandon, Sewnarine Chattergoon, Richard Ramdeen, Chandrapaul Hemraj and Vishal Singh, who have all been placed on the standby list.
Guyana will be without the services of Ramnaresh Sarwan and Narsingh Deonarine who will be away on West Indies duties in Australia.
Shiv Chanderpaul will also be absent having been given a No Objection Certificate (NOC) to participate in the Bangladesh Premier League.
Four-day squad: Veerasammy Permaul (captain), Rajendra Chandrika, Tagenarine Chanderpaul, Leon Johnson, (vice-captain), Assad Fudadin, Christopher Barnwell, Steven Jacobs, Derwin Christian, Devendra Bishoo, Ronsford Beaton, Paul Wintz, Keon Joseph, Amir Khan.
