JEROME BLACKETT won the Cruise To Run Barbados 5K in a blistering pace of 17:15 minutes while Christina Laurent was equally impressive in taking the women’s prize in 28:37.
Exactly 300 runners participated in Friday’s event on the Spring Garden Highway which ended with entertainment by Cassius Clay and others.
However, there was no joy for the other racers when the start signal saw Blackett taking an early lead. He never eased up.
The visiting entrants numbered many serious and fun seeking competitors who placed as high as fifth among the men and fourth in the ladies.
Blackett was followed by locals Akeem Marshall, Hakeem Newton and Pierre Stanford with visitor Amos King taking fifth.
Laurent, who is an intern student at the University of the West Indies, proved that last week’s win over Carlie Pipe was no fluke. Pipe ended third behind Laurent and Elizabeth Williams. Fourth was visitor Michaela Skelly-Lankford. Laurent’s time saw her finishing sixth overall.(KB)
