THE YOUTH IN AGRICULTURE PROGRAMME continues to instil a love of farming into its participants, so much so they are willing to continue their involvement without payment.
Founder Undene Whittaker said the year-long programme, now in its sixth year, usually ran short of funds by yearend, so the participants could not be provided with the $150 stipend as the programme wound down.
However, for the past three years, she said, participants had been coming to take care of the animals and crops without payment.
“Some of the youth continue to come without the stipend as we don’t have the funds. We now have more than 300 pounds of pumpkins as well as cassava, marrow, tomatoes and peppers and a number of lambs have also been born,” she said. (CA)
