The newest tournament on the annual calendar of the Barbados Golf Association (BGA) tees off this morning at the Barbados Golf Club, Durants, Christ Church.
The BGA Challenge Cup, which has attracted 120 players, was designed to create greater activity for local and visiting golfers in the first quarter of the year and bring together players of varying skill levels,BGA secretary Trenton Weekes said.
Golf has emerged as an important element of the island’s sports tourism programme, and every year between December and April, hundreds of North American and European players, commonly referred to as Snowbirds, visit the island to play at various courses.
“The Challenge Cup will offer another organized competition for Barbadians and visitors,”?Weekes said.
“It will be played under the best ball format and this can both test the more accomplished players and also allow recreational players to have fun.”
Under the two-ball (better-ball) format, the two players making up a team will each play their own golf ball throughout the round. Team members then compare their scores on each hole and the lower of the two scores counts as the team’s score.
Winners will receive a challenge trophy as well as two return airline tickets to Trinidad and Tobago, compliments Caribbean Airlines, the sponsors of the tournament.(PR)
