Winners from last month’s general election were on the road yesterday, with representatives from both major political parties staging motorcades.
The Democratic Labour Party’s (DLP) team included St Michael North West representative, Christopher Sinckler; Christ Church West Central’s Stephen Lashley; St Michael West Central’s James Paul; Christ Church East Central MP Ronald Jones; St Philip North representative Michael Lashley; St John MP Mara Thompson; and St Philip South MP Adriel Brathwaite.
Member of Parliament for St Michael South East, the Barbados Labour Party’s (BLP) Santia Bradshaw, was also on the road.
The successful candidates turned out to thank their constituents for electing them.
Bradshaw, who narrowly won her seat, spoke about the hard work she had to put in.
“This seat was won by the BLP in the previous election and I think the people have vested their confidence back to the BLP,” she said.
“Even though Hamilton Lashley had crossed the floor, they did not see the level of representation when he was a BLP MP, which resulted in the disillusionment of the people with the political process, and I had to work even harder to show them I could be a representative who could make a difference in their lives.”
As for former St Michael South East MP Hamilton Lashley, he was spotted riding with Paul on his motorcade, in a celebratory mood.
Many of the motorcades ended with an entertainment package. Stephen Lashley said it was important to give thanks for the “tremendous support” he had received, which was what his motorcade and subsequent concert were all about. His motorcade featured many youths.
Other MPs celebrated in different ways. MP for St George South, the BLP’s Dwight Sutherland, spent yesterday evening at the Ellerton Wesleyan Holiness Church while St Joseph representative Dale Marshall took part in a community breast cancer walk in support of Felicia Leacock.
MP for St Lucy Denis Kellman spent Saturday night hosting a big celebration at the North Stars Cricket Club for his supporters and well-wishers.
The party-goers enjoyed lots of food and drink as well as the DLP’s election campaign songs.
Many expressed satisfaction that Kellman was given a ministry which they said would provide him more opportunities to develop St Lucy. (CA)
