Hard truth

Barbados have not sent a boxer to the last three Olympic Games, and according to Anthony Jones, president of the Boxing Association of Barbados, it may be quite some time before a Barbadian reaches that stage again.
Jones made the comments yesterday at a press conference at the National Stadium Lounge to announce the 12-bout Horace Phillips Memorial Boxing Tournament which will come off Saturday at 7:30 p.m. at the Springer Memorial Auditorium.
He lamented that many of the avenues which were formerly open to boxers to gain exposure and experience in the region were dwindling.
Even the Caribbean Championships were no longer being held in their original format, as the Caribbean Boxing Association no longer existed.
“We’ve lost that little exposure, that little aim that our boxers had coming home with a Caribbean medal. We lost that. We have lost the ability to get the exposure that is needed to move on,” Jones said.
“Before, we had boxers that went to the Olympics. It will be [a] long time now before we can look at sending boxers to the Olympics.
