Barbados’ future in cycling doesn’t appear to end with Darren Matthews.
Highly-rated prospect Jamol Eastmond has delivered on his promising talents at the regional scene after winning two track events among four other podium finishes at last weekend’s annual Easter Grand Prix in Trinidad.
Competing in the highly-competitive international class, Eastmond opened the meet’s proceedings by capturing the featured 30-lap race before returning two nights later to cap his performance with a victory in the two-lap event.
The wins sandwiched second-place showings in the ten-lap, four-lap and nine-lap races and a bronze medal ride in the unknown event.
Eastmond also placed fourth in both the elimination race and 40-lap point race – where Bajan teammate Matthews managed to grab a bronze medal – to finish the third overall in the international class.
Barbados’ success didn’t end with Eastmond. Talented young riders Joshua Kelly and Edwin Sutherland were adjudged the top two cyclists in the junior category after dominating all of the events in that division.
Kelly’s younger brother Jacob just missed out on top overall honours in the tiny mite category after a fourth-place finish in the last event of the championships allowed hometown boy Tyler Coles to move to the top of the standings. (JM)
