Barbados volleyball commenced its “operation rebuild” with the launchof an FIVB Young Players’ Seminar yesterday at the Garfield Sobers Sports Complex.
The seminar, which will run until Saturday, is being conducted by international coach Jeff Almiza and has attracted 30 top players between the ages of 12 and 19.
This is the first of three courses which will be conducted by the FIVB Regional Development Centre (RVDC) with a coaches’ Level I and Beach Courses slated to be staged later in the year.
The first day saw Almiza, with local coaches John Stuart and Shennel Pooler along with Cuban Julio Caballero and RVDC director, Jonea Rima, introducing the players to basic physical warm up strategies as well as being shown various styles of playing the game outside of the conventional practices.
Volleyball president John Griffith said the courses being held at the RVDC during 2013 represented a tripartite move by the Barbados Volleyball Association to push the island’s game back to the pinnacle in the region.
“We have recognized that the future of the resurgence of Barbados in the region and beyond hinges on our youth, the coaches and performance on the beach,” he said.
“Therefore, this course and the upcoming two will expose our youth, our coaches and the beach players to advanced training and certification which will be of tremendous help in greater development of Barbados’ volleyball.” (KB)
