The Nation’s Associate Editor, Sherie Holder-Olutayo takes a look at what’s trending today in Barbados.
Readers today are commenting on the plight of businesses in Bridgetown that are reeling from the perfect financial storm. One merchant Eddie Abed of Abed’s is forecasting that seven to ten more operations in the City will be downsizing with up to 50 workers losing their jobs. Some of our online readers weighed in on this issue.
Freedom Reigns: This has been coming for a long time now. When I pass through Bridgetown I often wonder what on earth is going on. By the way this is from a layman’s point of view since I am not a business person myself. Operators need to access what’s going on around them. There are certain stores that have the same drab look from when I was a child (I’m 40 something), some have overstocked on a variety of items that take forever to move. The layout in some stores is ridiculous at best, some of the items look outdated. I also recognise that some businesses seem to lack marketing skills and the ability to “think outside the box”. Then again some of these same operators may have interests in other areas and may not really be too keen on upgrading the ones that are not as profitable.
Jason Cayenne: The DLP will surely blame this on what’s happening outside of this country and never take a look at how heavily taxed we are. I don’t know what’s harder these days finding a job or keeping it if you were lucky enough to be blessed with the opportunity because you are not overqualified or inexperienced.
Reeko Lynch: Should’ve voted red. Now the City is blue.
