Meet us at the Corner!

IT’S BACK! The island’s premiere open mic event, Mahalia’s Corner, has officially returned for its third season, this time housed in the open air comfort of Fusion Restaurant, Bayshore Complex, The City.
As per last season, this season is limited to five shows, and so Nexcyx wasted no time in bringing the action. After a lively opening set by the band, the audience was treated to an exciting mix of new faces and established acts in the open mic, including Rebel Glam, Khiomal of krosfyah fame, Michael Alexander, winner of the Richard Stoute Over-21 Contest last year, as well as an impromptu appearance by Strategy vocalist Tejay.
All that served as an appetizer for the meal that was to follow. Featured guest Rochelle Griffith astounded the audience with a mix of covers and original music, and left no doubt she is one of the strongest new voices to arise out of Barbados in some time.
When Rochelle performed a cover of Lianne La Havas’ song Lost & Found – a choice she said was inspired past romantic experiences – the audience stood still as she sang airily, “You broke me, and taught me to truly hate myself.” The ballad built into a powerful refrain and sent her voice into stratospheric heights, but she managed it like a simple roll call, no matter the emotions that were clear on her face.
Even beyond her angelic voice, what was refreshing about Rochelle’s set was her intimacy with the crowd. She told stories, she joked around, she laughed.
It was truly like sitting with a friend as she shared something she’s been working on with you. But then, that’s a feeling you get from most of the performers at Mahalia’s Corner. (AEB)
