A smiling Miriam Payne graciously accepted birthday greetings from Governor General Sir Elliott Belgrave, family and friends yesterday as they gathered to celebrate her 100th birthday.
Payne shared a toast with Sir Elliott, and reminisced on her younger days as a mother, housewife and shopkeeper.
Giving credit to God for making it all possible, she said, “I was with the Lord from the time I was a Sunday school girl. I love the Lord, I live for him and he helped me raise my children,” she said.
Originally from Mount Brevitor, St Peter, Payne now lives in Rock Dundo, St James, and attends the Rock Dundo Christian Mission Church.
She laughingly shared the story of how she met her husband whom she married while she was in her 20s.
“When the young man met me, I tell him that I love the Lord. He wanted to be friends with me, so I told him he need to come to church with me. He came, so I like him then.”
