Seanon Williams finally got some retribution when he defeated arch rival and fellow Davis Cup teammate Russell Moseley in the men’s final of the Pine Hill Dairy Tennis Championships last Thursday at the Ocean View Tennis courts.
Williams won 6-3, 6-4 to avenge previous losses to his national team colleague.
In an entertaining match with high level of play, Williams made very few unforced errors and Moseley often found himself in an uncustomary defensive position.
With one service break in each set and with Williams having a high percentage of first serves, he won the first set comfortably.
Moseley actually had to stave off a match point at 2-5 down in the second and after winning that game seemed to find his form, but it was too little too late, and he also lost the second set.
The women’s open was won by No. 1 seed Melena Lopez who defeated No. 2 Donna Gibbs 6-1, 6-3. Lopez had too much fire power for Gibbs to counteract, hitting winners at will from both sides.
Her improved serve also had Gibbs on the back foot from the outset.
Matthew Weir took the Men’s 35 singles crown, beating defending champion Alan Grogan 7-6 (5), 6-4.
Grogan valiantly went to a tie break in the first set before losing it at five.
Weir took the initiative early in the second with some aggressive play, forcing the normally consistent Grogan into unforced errors before going on to wrap it up in straight sets.
However, Weir found the going a little tougher in the doubles with partner Raymond Forde. The No. 1 seeds were upset 6-1, 6-7, 10- 8 by unseeded Steven Niles and John chandler. (PR/SAT)
