Scores of workers are toiling for more than 25 years on the plantations and are retiring with little or nothing.
Opposition Leader Mia Mottley, who toured plantations at Andrews and Applewhaites this afternoon, thinks it is a state of affairs that is unjust and should not be allowed to continue.
“It can’t be fair because these are the people who helped to build the sugar industry. It is the product for which we have global pre-eminence, it is a product which leads to rum for which we have equal pre-eminence and we are going to have to address the issue of them retiring with nothing other than the normal National Insurance pension,” said Mottley, who toured the plantations with fellow Members of Parliament Gline Clarke and Trevor Prescod.
Mottley, who spoke to several labourers, also outlined concerns in relation to modest wages, work conditions and praedial larceny.
Mottley also expressed concern about conditions of work such as the unavailability of toilet facilities.
