FREE EDUCATION is threatening the survival of private schools.
The situation has apparently become so dire that the head of one of the oldest private institutions is saying schools like his are on the way out.
Speaking during a tour of his school by Parliamentary Secretary in the Ministry of Education, Senator Harry Husbands, and other officials yesterday, principal of Metropolitan School Oliver Cox said declining numbers and lack of funds were contributing to the demise of private schools.
In the early days, Metropolitan would have moved to different locations to accommodate the burgeoning numbers, which once exceeded 600. But with the declining trend over the years, the school introduced evening classes and a kindergarten in order to keep its doors open. (YB)
