Local teams have found the going tough in the XXVI Banks International Masters Football Festival.
Ahead of yesterday evening’s four quarter-final matches, Benfica were only Barbadian side to advance to the last eight.
The tournament climaxes today at the Wanderers Club ground, Dayrells Road, with semi-final matches set for between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. before the final at 4:30 p.m.
Benfica moved in the quarter-finals after defeating Trinidad and Tobago Defence Force 2-1 yesterday and finished off their preliminary round action with a crushing 6-0 win against BAOC of Canada on Saturday.
Local side Paradise, last year’s runners-up, were eliminated in the round of 16 after they were beaten 4-3 on penalties by Royalty Ballers.
Four other Barbadian teams also crashed out in the round of 16.
Wildey went out in a penalty shootout, going under 5-4 to Brooklyn Central of United States.
Trents were outclassed 5-1 by Unity of Trinidad and Tobago, who had earlier crushed Carlton 5-0.
Wadadah went down 3-0 to Vincy Masters after beating BAOC 2-1.
Four of the eight matches in the round ahead of the quarter-finals went to penalties.
The tournament has attracted 28 teams from the host nation, Trinidad and Tobago, Guyana, Grenada, St Vincent and the Grenadines, United States, Canada and United Kingdom. (HG)
