Construction engineers in Barbados have complained about how long it is taking to update the building code, while saying that whenever new regulations are published they will continue to be unenforceable.
Barbados Association of Professional Engineers president Greg Parris expressed these concerns as he spoke about the Building Code, 1993 Edition, that languishes as an outdated document despite amendments recommended by professionals some five or six years ago.
“As engineers we are more concerned that a document that looks at the safety of the population is taking so long to become a legal document,” he told the MIDWEEK NATION, adding that a lack of this guide jeopardizes the safety of Barbadians.
“The most vulnerable people will be the people that own houses, the housing stock which is the majority of construction that we have here in Barbados,” he said. (GA)
