Daran Gill?and Mark Lewis retained their men’s title when the second Nissan Warrens Sports Club Beach Volleyball Classic climaxed at Brandon’s Beach on Sunday.
Gill and Jamaican national player Lewis rebounded from a horrible second week to defeat Curtis Gaskin and Omar Sealy 21-15, 21-19. Last week, Gill and Lewis had dropped to fourth in the men’s open after losing a preliminary match to Sheldon Roach and Victor Griffith.
The winners earned $1 000 for their second title while Kengie Matthews and Winston Gittens took $750 for their victory over Kyle Browne and Ronald Rice, 21-18, 21-18. Browne and Rice won $500.
Sharon Bovell and St Lucian national player Dania Hamilton took the women’s title having played unbeaten. They squeezed out an 18-21, 21-10, 15-13 victory over Julia Lewis and Anthazia Mason in persistent drizzles. The winners had to fight from a set down as well as a gap of 11-13 in the decisive set. Bovell and Hamilton had also defeated Lewis and Mason in the first week of action.
The third position in the women’s open went to Sand Stormers of Lisa Austin and Mona Crawford who topped A1 Beckles of Talya Beckles and Shennel Pooler 21-18, 21-19. The women’s open paid prizes of $1 000, $750 and $500 for the top three places.
The intermediate men’s division was won by Beach Merkas of Jabarry Goodridge and Stephen Packer who beat Freemar of Cheyne Freeman and Jamar Thompson 21-11, 21-11. Nathaniel McClean and Ammuniki Wood placed third by stopping Dario Carrington and Kyle King, 21-10.
NK Ballers of Nicole Austin and Kim Beckles won the intermediate women by crunching Granola Bars’ Janina Mayers and Deandra Small 23-21, 16-21, 15-5. Amber Alleyne and Sylvia Morris ended third following their 24-22 win over Stacey Atherley and Melissa Williams.
The intermediate winners were presented with notebooks by sponsors Nissan while Warrens Sports Store gave a pair of shoes to the open winners and all of the competitors received snack packs from Good Times Food.
