THE SWEET STRAINS of steel pan music filled the air in the grounds of Ilaro Court yesterday as the Hope Foundation held its annual garden party there.
In a continuing effort to raise awareness about lupus, sickle cell anemia and arthritis, which remain three of the lesser known chronic diseases, the foundation uses the party to raise funds to carry out its mandate, president Shelley Weir explained yesterday.
The annual Lupus Awareness Campaign costs over $60 000. Additionally programmes on sickle cell anemia and arthritis, though not as expensive, still require thousands of dollars.
The highlight of the party was a modelling showcase by people affected by these conditions. They wore clothing by AfricaNET, imported from Africa.
Early evening showers did little to dampen the spirit of the more than 300 patrons who consumed tea, sandwiches and fish cakes in addition to an array of Barbadian dishes, including pudding and souse, and cou cou and salt fish. (LK)
