WITH MILLIONS of dollars needed to run its diocesan office, feed the poor and assist youth, the elderly and the sick, the Anglican Church is formulating a plan to best utilize the large tracts of land it has inherited over the centuries.
Chairman of the Barbados Diocesan Trustees, Hartley Richards, says the island’s leading denomination needs about half-million dollars a year to run its diocesan office effectively and to reach out and assist in more direct ways to Barbadians, including those with diseases like HIV/AIDS.
“We are trying to identify all of the land that belongs to the diocese, and at the moment we’re concentrating on glebe lands in St Philip, St Thomas and St George and St Peter – although we haven’t yet looked at developing those in St Peter,” he told the DAILY NATION.
“In addition, we have Bishop’s Court, where the bishop’s original residence was, and the St Gabriel’s School area in Collymore Rock, where the current diocesan office is located. These are prime areas we’ve identified for immediate development,” he added.
