BARBADOS IS getting its first 100 per cent local music radio station.
Following strident calls in the entertainment fraternity, Bajan Radio International is set to come on stream by November with not only local music but extracts of cultural activities and the promotion of Barbadian products and services.
The establishment of the digital station, which is slated to be on the FM band and online, is being coordinated by Canadian-based musician/producer and former cultural officer Roger Gibbs, veteran broadcaster and calypsonian Win Callender, veteran artiste and songwriter Smokey Burke, New York-based magazine publisher Mary Yearwood and marketing veteran Wendell Callender.
“The station will focus on music written, produced and sung by Barbadians, whether they be living here or abroad, so obviously that would include artistes like Rihanna, Shontelle, keyboardist Miles Robertson who features in British singer Adele’s music . . . So wherever we have Bajan music in any part of the world this will be a forum for bringing it together,” said Wendell Callender.
He added that the timing was based mainly on the need to further promote Barbados as a brand internationally.
