The government of Barbados is being warned to immediately address the issue of violence among children before the situation gets out of control.
This caution has come from professor of child development and nutrition at the University of the West Indies’ Open Campus in Jamaica, Professor Julie Meeks Gardner, who noted that violence among children was rife in the Caribbean.
She was delivering the University in the Community Lunchtime Lecture at the Grand Salle of the Central Bank yesterday. The topic was Responses To Issues? On Children And Violence In The Caribbean.
“Just a cursory look at the Internet shows that you [Barbados] seem to be having a problem with your young people as well and issues to do with violence,” said Meeks Gardner, adding that children under 12 were most susceptible to physical violence. (MM)
