MOST OF?BARBADOS’ hotels and guesthouses are tired and in need of urgent upgrading if they are to compete with other first class destinations.
Moreover, managing director of Argo Development Studio, David Campion, said the tourism market was shrinking and the tourists that were willing to travel and spend wanted high quality.
“Barbados is in need of high-end hotel projects. It is in need of a higher calibre of guest rooms. At the moment there are a lot of three-star [properties] but Barbados is in need of additional four star and new hotel stock. There is a lot of old stock that is tired and needs to be updated,”
he told BARBADOS BUSINESS AUTHORITY last Thursday, following the official launch of his company and its website at Hythe House, Welches, Christ Church.
Noting that there was no issue with safety and health on the island, Campion said: “Like anywhere in the world there will be some isolated incidents . . . . but generally Barbados is a safe country. What we must make sure is that in Barbados we can provide a level of hotels and guest rooms that rival the best of the other islands.”
He added: “It is important for any country to stay on top of its tourism industry and Barbados has so much to offer internationally. The most important thing is our guest room count and is that guest room count quality on offer enough to entice international visitors here or is there more availability of a higher quality guest room and hotel experience elsewhere?” (MM)
