Sound advice for doctors

Moreover he must be well thought of by outsiders or he may fall into reproach and the snare of the devil. – 1 Timothy 3:7
DURING the Evening News on CBCTV8 last week, it was very refreshing to hear at last someone besides Father Curtis Goodridge, Rector of St Lucy’s Parish Church, and me who was prepared to address the dress problem in this country.
Dr Carlos Chase, president of the Barbados Association of Medical Practitioners, told 32 graduating doctors that they must dress in a professional way while on the job.
“As new doctors you will be judged by the public and your peers by what you say and do and how you carry yourself and your manner of dress . . . .
“Were the roles reversed and you were lying in bed would you want your team to appear in T-shirt, jeans and flip-flops while they discuss and perform intricate procedures on you?”
He also said: “As an intern, you should be courteous and respectful to your patients” .
For everything there is a season, and a time for  every matter under the heaven. (Ecclesiastes 3:1)
Studying at the University of the West Indies, where some students dress as they like, is one thing, but serving the public is another thing. I believe that the way one dresses reveals one’s personality.
We must never forget that regardless of how well a person may be qualified with degrees, behaviour towards the public is very important.
