WILKIE CUMBERBATCH thumped West Terrace 3-0 courtesy of a second-half double from Donte Greenidge yesterday to win BICO Primary Schools Football final  at Trents.
After a steady opening ten minutes, the deadlock was broken when West Terrace goalkeeper Kadeem Grandison fumbled Amir Alleyne’s curling long range  effort into his net  in the 12th minute.
Wilkie Cumberbatch continued to threaten their opponents’ goal and their persistence paid off when Greenidge scored soon after with  a magnificent free kick that cracked the net.
His second was a calm finish in the 34th minute.
Those strikes earned Greenidge a final tally  of 16 goals in the tournament and also the Man Of The Match and MVP awards.
“I feel happy about the goals  I’ve scored and hope to play better in secondary school,”  Greenidge said.
His coach, Tito Beckles,  said sticking to the strategy  led to his team’s triumph.
“We stuck to the plan and got the positive result. I feel good about performance,” he said.
West Terrace coach Roderick Harmon said although his side  did not win, he was still proud  of the boys’ display in the final  and throughout the competition.
“I knew that in order for us  to pull this one off, we would have to play a great game – an almost  perfect game,” Harmon said.
“Wilkie Cumberbatch have very good dribblers and I knew our defence would have to be on par.”
Harmon also lauded  Wilkie Cumberbatch.
“I said from the beginning  they are good team and congrats  to them,” he added.
Harmon said they would  keep developing for next  year’s competition.
“We’ve got some class threes  still left in the team and so,  we will keep building and as we  are the tigers, we will keep roaring,” he said.
“We are just thankful [to] God  for giving us the opportunity to get this far and we’ll take it. We’ll take second place.”
The third place play-off featured a double strike from Thierry Gale, but that was not enough  for St Bartholomew to prevent Cuthbert Moore from clinching  a 4-3 victory on penalty kicks after the teams played to a 2-2 draw.
St Bartholomew got their first goal on eight minutes when Gale scored from a direct free kick and added another four minutes later when he converted a penalty.
But Cuthbert Moore’s determination and stubborn defending prevailed when Tyrique Bailey-Edwards capitalized on the St Bartholomew goalkeeper’s  error in the 26th minute.
Shakron Jack equalized  with only seconds remaining  to send the match into penalties.
