PUTTING OBA’S NAME on the National Stadium may not be that far-fetched after all.
Minister of Sports Stephen Lashley believes Government should find a lasting way to commemorate Obadele Thompson’s achievements and has not ruled out renaming the Waterford venue in honour of the Olympic bronze medallist.
He made the comment in light of recent calls in the media to have Thompson’s name adorn the National Stadium to recognize the country’s first and only individual Olympic medallist.
“I’m very receptive to suggestions and I did see that particular suggestion but of course we have to look at it in its totality,” said Lashley of the proposed idea.
“That’s an idea, and of course we will look at that and other ideas as well, but I definitely agree with the principle that we should find lasting ways to recognize the talent and the prowess of our athletes.”
In the Wednesday edition of the MIDWEEK NATION, veteran freelance sports journalist Andi Thornhill advocated for Thompson to be honoured, arguing that failing to recognize athletes in such a manner might leave them to feel alienated and unappreciated.
This was following a stellar career that saw Thompson – Barbados’ most accomplished track athlete – capture an Olympic bronze medal in the 100 metres at the 2000 Sydney Games.
He is also among the elite few to do the sprint double at the NCAA outdoor championships after dominating the CARIFTA Games level.
But Thompson is similarly known for his strained relationship with the then Amateur Athletics Association following a well publicized back and forth between the two parties during his heyday.
However, the spat still hasn’t managed to overshadow Thompson’s accolades and lasting legacy, at least not in the eyes of Lashley.
“I believe that any opportunity we get to honour our sportspersons should be taken, and I know we will explore the possibilities to honour Oba,” he said.
That stance is similar to the one Government will be taking with the English-born Emmerson Boyce, who became the first Bajan footballer to win the FA Cup after captaining Wigan Athletic to glory in last month’s final at Wembley.
“We will be discussing a number of potential areas of collaboration between Emmerson and the Ministry of Sports,” Lashley revealed.
“We’re looking at finding opportunities for young Barbadian footballers, considering the accomplishments of Emmerson and the potential of his assistance in exposing young footballers to international training.”
