New site for St Joseph’s Church

St Joseph’s Parish Church will be rebuilt a short distance away from the now condemned ruin of the former church.
Anglican Bishop Dr John Holder disclosed yesterday that the diocese had recently purchased two acres of land “on the hill going down to Grantley Adams when you pass the Eric Holder Centre, just a few yards down on the right hand side.”
Architectural plans for the design of a new church now have to be drawn.
It will be the fourth St Joseph Parish Church to be sited within that area of the rural parish. The three previous buildings constructed on the problematic Horse Hill site, a short distance away from the new proposed site, all fell victim to land slippage and had to be demolished.
Bishop Holder said the Horse Hill site would continue to be a burial ground, while conservation interests had suggested that a section of the ruins of the abandoned church buildings be preserved and left as “classical historic ruins.” (GC)
