JACK FRANCIS has dethroned Ronald “Suki” King as Barbados’ draughts champion.
Francis, who has lived in the shadow of the illustrious King for more than two decades, won the national title when the annual national championships climaxed on Friday night.
In front of a large audience which braved the weather to attend the final, Francis defeated King, the world Go-As-You-Please champion, achieving his triumph in the final game of the second round.
Francis earned a place in the final after defeating Colin Price in their second semi-final.
However, it was not as easy for the defending champion King as he met some resistance from his opponent Darwin Lorde.
That match was forced into a reserved second round after neither player was able to force a win.
King advanced by virtue of superior honour points from the preliminary rounds.
Francis and King had emerged top of their respective groups in the preliminary phase of the competition which had the presence of American Michael Holmes. (HG/PR)
