The Labour Department has been told to ensure that employers in Barbados with 25 or more workers are adhering to the Safety and Health at Work Act (SHaW) or enforce the penalties.
This call was made by Dennis de Peiza, General Secretary of the Congress of Trade Unions and Staff Associations of Barbados (CTUSAB), who noted that the theme for occupational health and safety week – Zero In On Safety, meant “a call to action”.
“Let us move beyond the snail’s pace syndrome that now seems to beset the actions being taken in Barbados,” he said.
“The Congress of Trade Unions and Staff Associations of Barbados is adamant that enforcement is necessary if serious inroads are to be made in the engendering of a safety and health culture in the workplaces across Barbados. This means that there is need to ensure compliance with the provision of the SHaW Act,” added de Peiza. (MM)
